PARIS/TOKYO -- French defense giant Thales will establish a base in Japan to handle the maintenance and operational support of defense equipment, Nikkei has learned.

This is believed to be the first time a foreign defense company has established a dedicated base in Japan for the maintenance and operation of Japanese defense equipment. Future expansion to civilian use is also envisioned.

Technology will also be transferred to its partner, Japan Steel Works, and production of the 2R2M heavy mortar system will begin in Japan from next year.
