International scientists warn that sea-level rise driven by melting Antarctic ice will hit China's wealthy coastal cities, including Hong Kong and Shanghai, 15 to 20 percent harder than the global average. They say gravitational shifts from shrinking Antarctic ice redistribute ocean water toward China's densely populated coastlines.

Sea levels along China's coast are set to rise significantly faster than the global average, according to a new assessment by international scientists. Cities such as Hong Kong and Shanghai could see increases 15 to 20 percent higher than the worldwide figure as Antarctic ice continues to melt.

Researchers say the disparity stems from gravitational shifts: as the Antarctic ice sheet shrinks, its reduced mass pulls less ocean water toward the pole, redistributing that water elsewhere, including toward China's densely populated eastern coastline. The effect compounds existing flood and subsidence risks in cities built on low-lying deltas.

Scientists caution that even meeting the Paris Agreement's most ambitious goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius would not fully offset the elevated risk facing China's coastal economic hubs. The findings add pressure on policymakers to accelerate coastal defences and climate adaptation planning in the years ahead.
