A new Lowy Institute report finds that the US, China and Japan have all significantly reduced foreign aid to South-East Asia. The report points to a broad pullback in development financing across the region.

A new report from the Australia-based Lowy Institute found that the US, China and Japan have simultaneously reduced foreign aid to South-East Asia. The report shows the combined contribution from these three major donors has fallen markedly compared with recent years. Researchers said the decline has affected funding for infrastructure, health and education projects.

Many developing economies in the region may now need to rely more heavily on private investment to fill the gap. Analysts say the pullback could mark a new phase in the contest for regional influence. How South-East Asian governments respond to the shift will be closely watched.
