A former top executive at HSBC has launched an artificial intelligence-driven wealth management start-up, setting her sights on a billion-dollar valuation and betting that AI can transform how individuals manage their investments and finances.
Trista Sun, formerly a managing director in the international wealth and premier banking division at HSBC, said in an interview last week that her venture Equora aimed to help investors manage their finances “proactively” with AI agents, addressing large-scale needs that existing AI tools fail to meet.
She said the company’s platform, a2b2.ai, featured 10 AI agents specialising in different tasks, such as tracking product maturity dates, detecting fraudulent transactions and flagging market movements that impacted their portfolios.
The agents leveraged large language models (LLMs), including Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Moonshot AI’s Kimi and Qwen from Alibaba Group Holding, owner of the South China Morning Post.
Users could upload portfolio statements, while the system automatically scrubbed names and account numbers before storing the data, Sun added.
“I wanted to build something very, very proactive, but in the wealth and investment domain,” said Sun, who previously held several senior positions at HSBC, including executive vice-president at HSBC China.
The launch comes amid a wave of increasingly sophisticated general-purpose AI agents and a growing push by major AI companies into industry-specific applications.
Meta Platforms’ release of Muse earlier this month intensified the race to develop personal AI agents, while Anthropic and OpenAI last month unveiled products for financial services built on their latest LLMs. Sun, however, said “significant gaps” and user friction remained in the market.
Most general-purpose AI tools lacked deep financial expertise and relied heavily on the quality of user prompts, while many financial AI solutions faced conflicts of interest because they earned commissions from distributing investment products, Sun said. She added that she had yet to see a direct competitor to a2b2.
“[We want the platform to] try to serve you, be on your side, to not promote or sell things or have any other agenda,” Sun said.
She said a2b2 offered four subscription tiers, with monthly fees ranging from US$3 to US$90. The company would primarily target “mass affluent” individuals and households in Hong Kong and the US, with Singapore as its third market.
Sun, whose other former roles at HSBC included global head of international and cross-border business and global chief operating officer of wealth management, has set high expectations for the start-up.
The platform aimed to serve 1 million “active” and “sticky” paying users within two to three years, according to Sun.
Without sharing a specific valuation target for the start-up, Sun said she had been “used to managing billion-dollar businesses” throughout her career. “I’m used to that kind of scale,” she added.
Sun said she was currently funding the venture herself, but Equora could seek external funding next year.
