India's rapid adoption of digital payments has created new opportunities for digital lending, but consumer adoption of formal digital credit remains limited, according to a report by Amazon Pay and Pahle India Foundation. The study suggests that while awareness of digital credit products is widespread, concerns around trust and borrowing continue to hold back usage.

The report points to growing opportunities for digital lenders, particularly in Tier 2 cities, where adoption of digital credit products is outpacing larger urban centres. Improving consumer trust and addressing fraud concerns are expected to play a key role in expanding the market. Digital Credit GapBased on a survey of more than 5,100 consumers across 100 cities, the report found that 88% of respondents are aware of digital credit products, but only 31% actively use them.

Nearly 64% said they have never formally applied for digital credit through a mobile app, highlighting a significant gap between awareness and adoption. Digital PaymentsThe report also shows that UPI has become the preferred payment mode for online shopping, groceries, travel, dining and fuel purchases. However, cash remains the dominant payment method for rent and housing-related transactions, indicating that digital payments have yet to replace cash across all spending categories.

Preferred Payment ModeDigital spending is also not yet universal. Only 39% of consumers said that more than 60% of their monthly expenditure is made through digital payment modes.

The survey found stronger digital credit adoption in Tier 2 cities than in Tier 1 markets. Buy Now Pay Later usage stood at 60% in Tier 2 cities, compared with 45% in Tier 1 cities. Consumers in smaller cities were also more likely to use credit and EMI options available through payment applications, suggesting that demand for digital lending is expanding beyond India's largest urban centres. Beyond MetrosTrust remains one of the biggest barriers to digital lending. Consumers rated their trust in payment apps at 3.98 out of 5 for payments, but the score dropped to 3.10 out of 5 for lending services.

More than half of those surveyed said they would consider app-based credit if fraud protection were guaranteed, while 16.7% said they would still avoid digital credit. Many non-users said they preferred borrowing from banks or family members, while others were reluctant to take on debt. Hesitation to BorrowThe report also assessed merchant sentiment towards digital payments. Around 81% of merchants said they are open to accepting digital payments, and nearly 80% reported improvements in sales or business efficiency after adopting them.
