Ten Cuban airports, including Havana's, cannot refuel airliners until November 1, and five are operating shorter hours because of the shortage. Flights departing from Florida are now carrying extra fuel to make the return trip.

Ten airports across Cuba, including the capital Havana, will be unable to refuel commercial airliners until November 1 because of a jet fuel shortage, according to aviation officials. Five of the affected airports are also cutting their operating hours until supplies improve.

Airlines flying the short route from Florida have adapted by loading extra fuel before departure so their aircraft can make the return trip without refuelling in Cuba. The shortage adds to a string of recent fuel and power disruptions on the island.

Cuban officials have not given a detailed explanation for the shortfall, though the country has faced recurring fuel import difficulties in recent years. Airlines and travel agencies are advising passengers to expect possible schedule changes before the restrictions are lifted.
