Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday described new findings about Israeli spyware Pegasus as “a crime against the state,” after prosecutors said the system transferred data outside Poland and could allow its Israeli manufacturer access to sensitive information.
In a video posted on US social media company X, Tusk called the revelations “one of the biggest scandals in the history of Poland after the fall of communism,” TVP World reported.
“Imagine that the people responsible for justice and national security [in Poland] handed over thousands, tens of thousands, of sensitive details about Polish citizens to a foreign country, Israel, without having any control over it,” he said.
Tusk also asserted that Pegasus manufacturer NSO Group cooperated with Israeli security services.
His remarks followed a statement by the National Prosecutor’s Office detailing findings from an investigation underway since March 2024.
Citing an analysis by Poland’s domestic security and counterintelligence agency, ABW, prosecutors said the Central Anticorruption Bureau, which operated Pegasus, “did not have complete control over the operation of the system.”They said NSO Group could access infrastructure used to process and store operational data, while information transmitted through the system left Polish territory.
After taking office in 2023, Tusk’s coalition launched investigations into allegations that the previous Law and Justice government purchased Pegasus with public funds and used it to spy on political opponents and journalists.
Former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro and other senior figures from the previous administration deny wrongdoing, maintaining that the system was necessary for national security and used only with court approval.
However, the head of a parliamentary inquiry said Monday that judges who authorized its use did not fully understand the spyware’s surveillance capabilities.
