The Berlin-based newspaper taz on Monday criticized the Israeli government’s decision to deny a work visa to one of its correspondents.
Taz journalist Serena Bilanceri, who has been reporting from Israel and the Palestinian territories for many years and has been the daily's official correspondent since June 2026, has also been barred from entering the country.
This action constitutes “a significant infringement on press freedom. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is thereby departing from the principles of democratic rule of law. We are otherwise only familiar with such actions from authoritarian regimes,” the newspaper said. According to taz, Bilanceri had already encountered difficulties when entering and leaving Israel in the past.
Last year, her laptop was confiscated at Tel Aviv Airport, allegedly for an explosives screening. It was returned to her in a damaged condition. Bilanceri was not given a reason for the decision.
According to the Israel National News website, the Israeli Population and Immigration Authority accused Bilanceri of calling for sanctions against Israel in two articles published in September and November 2025.
In both articles, Bilanceri commented on the illegal settlement of the West Bank and the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Israeli authorities apparently interpreted this as a call for a boycott.
Israel National News also said the State of Israel has the legal right to deny entry to people who call for a boycott of Israel.
Bilanceri is accused of defaming Israel. Avi Cohen Scali, director general of the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, was quoted as saying that “calls for a boycott of Israel under the guise of professional journalism” would not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, the editorial board of taz reacted by saying that “Serena Bilanceri has at no point called for a boycott of the State of Israel. It is unacceptable that the Israeli government is using legitimate criticism—which has also been voiced by the EU—of Israel’s actions in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip as a pretext to restrict press freedom.”Bilanceri herself also emphasized in a social media post that she has never advocated for a boycott of Israel.
“I have spoken out in favor of financial and military sanctions in response to the Israeli government’s actions in the West Bank, particularly in light of the violence perpetrated by settlers and the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip at the time.”“And it is completely normal—indeed, it is part of a journalist’s job—to express one’s opinion in an opinion piece—in this case, in the two articles mentioned. To those who made this decision and spoke with the Israeli media but not with me, I would like to say: You are not banning ‘anti-Israeli actors.’ You are banning foreign journalists who have criticized your government’s actions,” she added.
Bilanceri is not the first journalist to be denied entry to Israel since 2025. Before her, four other journalists received the same treatment, likely also on the basis of this law. They include French journalist Alice Froussard, Spanish journalist Queralt Castillo, French photojournalist Frederique Le Brun and Alessandro Stefanelli, an Italian journalist and photographer.
Since other German and European media representatives have experienced or could experience similar treatment, taz called on the German federal government “to urge the Israeli government to respect fundamental and human rights—including freedom of expression and freedom of the press—and to allow taz employee Serena Bilanceri to re-enter Israel and resume her work there without restriction.”
