Workers move recently cut tree branches in Cairo, Egypt, on October 13, 2022. Avenue 250 is a dark green line cutting through Cairo. Some of its trees are more than 100 years old. Ficus trees of every size, flame trees ablaze with red flowers in May and enormous rubber trees have grown along an old railway line, forming a tunnel through which slow-moving trains pass, sounding whistles as powerful as foghorns.

Alongside this accidental green corridor, countless plant sellers, flowerpot vendors and gardening tool merchants set up shop in the shade, selling their wares at high prices to the residents of Maadi – an oasis of greenery in Africa's most populous city, with more than 23 million inhabitants.

In June 2021, the Egyptian government announced plans to raze the entire area to create a new thoroughfare, the Axis of Algeria, designed to run across southern Cairo. The plant sellers were ordered to evacuate. Nothing seemed capable of stopping the new regime, led by autocratic Abdel Fattah el-Sissi since 2013, from carrying out this project. Yet a local protest, backed by Egyptian celebrities, halted the bulldozers. Since then, the project has been suspended, though not officially abandoned.
