Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned that the interconnected systems that once united the world such as supply chains, trade and technology have become instruments of coercion, and declared that his country stands apart with a different approach.
“One of the biggest questions facing the world today is that of trust, of confidence — the confidence that supplies will continue uninterrupted in times of need,” Modi said at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi on Tuesday. “And it is here that India stands before you today with a different mindset, with a different thought process.”Modi identified choke points emerging along trade routes built over decades of globalization, compounded by the accelerating impact of artificial intelligence across every sector.
“Things that connected the world at one time are today being weaponized. They are all becoming tools for coercion and for exerting pressure,” Modi said.
Against that backdrop, Modi framed trust as the defining challenge of the current moment — specifically, confidence that supplies will continue uninterrupted in times of need, that promises made will be kept, and that partner countries will stand by one another.
Modi positioned India as offering a fundamentally different mindset, presenting the country as a reliable partner in a world where established relationships between nations and economic systems can no longer be taken for granted. He also touted India as one of the world’s fastest growing major economies that has brought opportunities for global investors.
