Chinese billionaire Cao Dewang, whose glass-making empire was featured in the Oscar-winning documentary , has urged Chinese investors expanding overseas to respect local laws, regulations and culture, drawing on decades of experience building a global manufacturing business amid shifting US-China relations.
Speaking at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on Monday, the founder of Fuyao Glass said the approach had been central to the firm’s success in the US and warned against simply transplanting Chinese practices overseas.
“When I go to America, I use American people and American resources,” he said, adding that Fuyao’s US operations employed between 6,000 and 7,000 people, with fewer than 200 staff sent from China.
Cao, 80, known as “China’s glass king”, founded Fuyao in 1987 and transformed it into the world’s largest automotive glass manufacturer.
The company’s US expansion became the subject of , which won an Academy Award for best documentary feature in 2020 and explored the cultural and labour tensions surrounding its Ohio plant.
Fuyao’s US operations have since become a case study in both the opportunities and challenges facing Chinese manufacturers going global, particularly as trade tensions and tariffs complicate investment decisions between the world’s two largest economies.
Cao stepped down as chairman of Fuyao last year, handing the position to his son, Cao Hui, in a generational transition at one of China’s most prominent privately owned manufacturers.
He has since turned his attention to education and philanthropy, particularly Fuyao University of Science and Technology, a non-profit institution he established in southeastern China’s Fujian province to cultivate engineering talent and explore new approaches to higher education.
“I have already announced my retirement,” Cao said at the HKU event. He added that Fuyao University of Science and Technology was not about personal recognition or simply creating another educational institution, but rather about exploring reforms to mainland China’s private university model.
He said he had pledged 10 billion yuan (US$1.7 billion) to the university, of which less than half had been spent, and expressed confidence in its long-term sustainability.
What should be passed on is wisdom. Wisdom, knowledge and character are more valuable than wealthCao Dewang, Fuyao Glass On succession, Cao said passing on a family business required long-term planning rather than acting only in a founder’s final years.
He added that Fuyao had begun preparing for succession as early as 1995, including by establishing a board structure designed to balance the influence of major shareholders and professional managers.
Asked what entrepreneurs should pass on to the next generation beyond wealth, Cao said the answer was not simply money.
“What should be passed on is wisdom,” he said. “Wisdom, knowledge and character are more valuable than wealth.”
