The Africa Nature Impact Fund, to be established with FSD Africa and FSD Africa Investments, seeks to raise $100 million for nature and nature-based carbon projects, the companies said in a joint emailed statement.

“Africa holds a quarter of the planet’s biodiversity, yet nature-based projects across the continent face major challenges in accessing the patient, fairly structured capital they need to succeed,” said Ann-Marie Chidzero, chief investment officer at FSD Africa Investments.
While more than 62% of Africa’s gross domestic product relies on nature and its resources, investment in projects that protect ecosystems and reduce carbon emissions remains far below what is needed, leaving many high-potential initiatives without the funding and support they need to grow, the companies said.

The impact fund aims to protect or regenerate an estimated 4.5 million hectares of land, sequestering or avoiding more than 100 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent over the life of its projects, and improve the livelihoods of 1.4 million people, half of them women, the companies said.
It also seeks to preserve more than 60 plant and animal species and will only invest in projects with benefit-sharing arrangements designed to direct a substantial portion of gross carbon value to host communities, with a target of generating about $450 million for them, according to the statement. The fund hasn’t received regulatory approvals and subscriptions for interests can only be made after it has been licensed.
