A Baltic tech company tucked away on the site of a former sock factory has soared to become Lithuania’s latest unicorn, positioning itself as the workhorse of the data-driven artificial intelligence revolution.
Vilnius-based Source, a web-data group that launched Tuesday as the umbrella group for Oxylabs and four other web-intelligence companies, is growing rapidly as AI developers fuel demand for public online data, Chief Executive Officer Vytautas Savickas said. The company has increased its data-processing capacity tenfold to keep pace with demand.
“It’s the biggest wave ever,” Savickas said in a Bloomberg News interview. “Basically, eight out of 10 biggest LLM labs leverage our infrastructure to collect that data real time,” he said, referring to large language models. He declined to name them, citing non-disclosure agreements.
This summer, the group became Lithuania’s sixth unicorn — a privately held company worth $1 billion or more — after securing investment from Warburg Pincus at a valuation of $3.6 billion. That makes it the country’s second-most valuable private technology company behind online fashion marketplace Vinted.
Source grew out of Oxylabs, a web-scraping company founded in 2015, which has helped Fortune 500 companies in e-commerce, travel and cybersecurity collect and process online public information at scale.
Some 350,000 tech teams, ranging from five-person startups to 10,000-person powerhouses, use Source solutions globally, generating $350 million in annual recurring revenue run rate, half of which come from the US market, Savickas said. The company will open a San Francisco office to be closer to key clients, including tech companies, top retailers and AI labs.
In a nod to its next phase, the group adopted the Source name while retaining Oxylabs as a separate brand.
The firm is in the process of building a new web API, or application programming interface, which will be backed by its own index of the internet to consolidate all of its existing data-collection tools into a single service designed specifically for AI agents.
The product is intended to let AI agents rapidly search and retrieve fresh public information from the web. Currently in early beta, it is set to launch in the coming weeks and has been built entirely in-house by a team of about 100 engineers and developers.
“They need the freshest data to ground their answers, otherwise they can hallucinate,” Savickas said of the AI models.
Savickas was speaking from Source’s headquarters located inside Vilnius’s Cyber City campus, a dense cluster that brings together Lithuania’s biggest tech names. Nord Security is next door and Vinted is across the street. The area is served by a bus stop named Vienaragių — Lithuanian for unicorn.
The buildings were constructed on the site of a former sock factory. The single city-block has come to symbolize Lithuania’s transformation from a low-cost manufacturing economy in the 1990s into a growing technology hub, with digital services playing an increasingly important role in the country’s exports.
Source increased its data-processing by about tenfold in the first half of this year, enabling it to process “petabytes and petabytes” of data a day as AI demand surges, Savickas said. Handling the mountain of data requires constant resource management.
“You always feel behind,” said Savickas, who took over as CEO this year. “It brings a lot of anxiety.”The company hired hundreds of employees to overcome engineering challenges, and now employs 800 globally, including more than 350 developers and engineers. Source competes most directly with Israel’s Bright Data, with the two companies among the largest global providers of web-data infrastructure.
Beyond the ability to keep up with data demand, the future accessibility of information on the web is also key for Source’s business. The rise of AI-driven scraping has triggered criticism and lawsuits against AI companies, alleging the extraction of information without compensation, thereby undermining content businesses and raising copyright concerns.
Source is a defender of the open web, Savickas said, adding that companies also have a right to protect private data and intellectual property. Source has compliance and ethics rules to ensure its web-scraping respects those boundaries, the Savickas said.
Limiting the flow of information online would benefit the biggest technology companies at the expense of businesses that rely on public data to build products, services and AI tools, according to the CEO.
“Big tech, big players want to monopolize” data, Savickas said. That would be “benefiting the core big tech, but then not the whole economy.”
