Sachs Group Inc. used a cut of its wealthy clients’ one-time windfall on SpaceX’s record public offering to pull forward $450 million of charitable giving.
The bank flagged the unique line in its expenses during its third-quarter earnings report Tuesday, noting that the costs reduced its diluted earnings per share by about $1.
Goldman had helped to arrange wealthy clients’ bets on the Elon Musk company more than five years ago. When the aerospace firm went public at a $1.77 trillion valuation earlier this year, Goldman clients who sold shares received a vast windfall and the bank received a cut worth hundreds of millions of dollars, Bloomberg News reported in October.
Goldman Chief Executive Officer David Solomon hinted at the move in September, suggesting that the bank would use the unexpected windfall to pull forward a significant amount of charitable giving because it was more tax efficient.
