Prisoners rejoiced as they left jail early during the second stage of a government scheme to ease overcrowding. Around 650 prisoners serving sentences between one-and-a-half and two-and-a-half years are expected to be released on Tuesday.

It's the second set of releases under changes brought in by the Sentencing Act, which will see around 5,000 prisoners scheduled to leave prison in batches over the next year, before their custodial sentences were due to end. This figure is down from 6,000, after ministers intervened to exempt rapists and the most serious child sex offenders from the scheme.
