British luxury car maker Bentley is aiming for a tripling of sales in India after the reduction in customs duty following the Indo-UK free trade agreement coming into effect, a senior official said on Tuesday. The company’s member of the board Axel Dewitz said the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the two countries has been a great success politically, and now it is up to the industries on both sides to leverage the opportunities it creates.“I believe the FTA will help drive sales and increase the turnover that Bentley and our partners in India can generate. It should significantly improve our sales outlook, potentially tripling our sales forecast for the Indian market,” he told PTI on the sidelines of an event on Tuesday.

He added that the reduction in customs duties, particularly on internal combustion engine vehicles, will certainly have a “positive impact” on the company’s sales in India and also made it clear that it does not target volumes alone as a luxury car maker. The price of its model – Bentley Bentayga Extended Wheelbase – is expected to come down by approximately 30-35% because of the agreement, which came into force in July this year, he said, adding that this is a “clear and direct benefit” for customers.

Meanwhile, the UK’s Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, Jonathon Reynolds, said there is excitement on both sides of where the trade relationship between the two countries and added that the agreement should act as a “floor and not the ceiling” to further expand ties. He also said that the UK signed up with Maharashtra, one of India’s most industrialised states, to unlock further opportunities on the trade front earlier in the day.
