On Tuesday morning, the dozens of journalists who make up CBS News' foreign bureau woke up to an email sent on behalf of Bari Weiss' handpicked foreign editor, Shayndi Raice. The message instructed staffers to make a point of attending the morning editorial meeting, immediately stirring intrigue among journalists about what Raice might have to say during the virtual gathering.

They didn't have to wait long for an answer. Moments after the meeting commenced, Raice opened by referencing Status’ reporting Monday, which detailed how Weiss had pushed legendary "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl to the brink of quitting following a series of highly contentious meetings over her report on Israeli settler violence in the West Bank. The story also revealed how Raice had pushed back on correspondent Holly Williams' inclusion of the Palestinian death toll in an "Evening News" report last week marking the anniversary of the October 7 terror attack.
Raice told the assembled journalists that she wanted to address the report, before launching into an uninterrupted 15-minute tirade in which she fiercely defended her editorial decisions, insisted they did not constitute "interference," and warned that "insubordination" would not be tolerated, declaring it "legal grounds for firing."
Throughout the extraordinary lecture, Raice repeatedly touted her own "editing talent," "experience," and "knowledge." But the most remarkable exchange came after she finished speaking, when Williams respectfully challenged Raice over the directives she had received on her report. What followed was an extraordinary back-and-forth in which Raice flatly told the veteran correspondent that she had gotten the story "wrong" because she doesn't "know the story as well as I do."
Raice then went further, casually dismissing that more than 74,000 Palestinians had been killed in Israel’s bombardment of Gaza as a "magic number," arguing that including it was "not saving Palestinians" and suggesting that citing the death toll amounted to little more than "posturing.”Raice had argued earlier that the number includes Hamas combatants.
