Malaysia is turning to Chinese satellite technology for earlier warnings of floods that hit the country during its annual northeast monsoon, Bernama reported.

The satellite-based system could provide more accurate and comprehensive weather forecasts, allowing authorities to better prepare for and mitigate disasters, the state news agency said, citing Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid, who chairs the nation’s Central Disaster Management Committee, is on a working visit to China through Friday.

Malaysia is prone to flash floods and landslides during the northeast monsoon, when heavy and persistent rain typically affects the country from November through March.

The devastating floods of December 2021 were among the worst in Malaysia’s history, killing more than 50 people and forcing about 400,000 from their homes. The disaster caused an estimated 6.1 billion ringgit ($1.5 billion) in damage, according to government figures, inundating homes, factories and businesses and damaging infrastructure. The industrialized state of Selangor was among the hardest hit.

Zahid said he will discuss ways with China’s Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong to expedite the acquisition of the satellite-based system, according to Bernama.
