Zambia’s state mining firm and Abu Dhabi’s International Resources Holding reaffirmed their commitment to working together, following allegations of funding breaches at their jointly-owned Mopani copper complex.

ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc and IRH “remain aligned on the long-term development” of Mopani Copper Mines, they said in a joint statement on Wednesday. The Emirati company controls 51% of Mopani, while ZCCM-IH holds the balance.

The statement comes a couple of weeks after Bloomberg News reported that the Zambian firm accused IRH of breaching agreements under which it acquired control of the Mopani in early 2024. In a letter to an IRH unit on Sept. 18, ZCCM-IH Chief Executive Officer Kakenenwa Muyangwa cited “breaches around funding, including failures to make equity funding available” and unapproved third-party debt being incurred.

The CEO’s letter outlined that ZCCM-IH’s “preferred outcome remains an amicable resolution of all outstanding issues between the parties” but said the company was prepared to “invoke the full range of contractual rights and remedies available to it.”IRH is the mining arm of International Holding Co., a sprawling $224 billion group chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whose brother is president of the United Arab Emirates.

IRH reiterates its commitment to support Mopani’s ambition to reach annual production of 300,000 tons of copper by 2029, according to the statement. Additionally, the partners are “working on new opportunities in exploration and wider mining operations, reinforcing a shared commitment to growing Zambia’s mineral output,” it said.

Zambia is Africa’s second-largest copper producer and aims to more than triple output to 3 million tons a year by early next decade.
