More than a dozen US companies are exploring opportunities in Malaysia’s rare earths industry, as Washington seeks to diversify supplies of critical minerals and reduce its reliance on China.
The companies are considering mining projects with local partners and potential investments in processing facilities, the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said in a statement Wednesday, without naming the firms.
The interest comes as the US steps up efforts to secure alternative sources of rare earths, vital components of magnets that go into electric vehicles, wind turbines and defence systems. China dominates the processing of rare earths and has used the world’s dependence on its supplies as leverage, restricting exports in response to tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump last year.
Malaysia is seeking foreign investment and technology to develop its industry. The US Embassy hosted a forum in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday that brought together government officials, industry executives and investors to explore commercial opportunities in the sector.
The gathering follows a critical minerals agreement signed by Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim about a year ago, aimed at expanding investment and developing alternative supply chains.
“Malaysia has made clear it wants trusted partners with the technology and capital to build a world-class rare earths industry,” David H. Gamble Jr., the US Embassy’s chargé d’affaires, said in the statement. “American companies are ready to be those partners.”
