Northwestern University’s Diego R. Känzig and Luca Zanotti and Harvard’s James H. Stock commit an elementary error by focusing on the concentrated benefits of higher oil prices while overlooking the diffused costs (“Analysis: Oil Shock Could Make U.S. Stronger,” U.S. News, Oct. 7).
They show the concentrated benefits to the energy industry, such as higher profit margins and more exports, but they stop there. They should have kept going, because they missed the diffuse costs that fall on everyone else. People are paying more for the same amount of energy as before the Iran war, and they have less left over for other things such as food, housing and investment.
