Armed with a stack of flyers, Tal Levy, 34, and Kyle Scoble, 36, made their way from door to door in a modest apartment building in Koreatown, a dense, urban neighborhood in Los Angeles. Many doors were closed on this Saturday, October 3. Two volunteers – one a computer scientist, the other a documentary producer – were there to persuade residents to vote in the November 3 elections for two Democratic Party candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). One is running for the House of Representatives in Washington, the other for mayor of Los Angeles.

Americans run grassroots campaigns. They go door to door, mobilizing an army of activists and one-day volunteers equipped with apps that map every street number, collecting information to build voter databases. On October 3, 300 supporters answered the DSA's call to canvass several neighborhoods in Los Angeles. In Koreatown, the average age of these volunteers did not exceed 30. And about half of them were taking part in this kind of operation for the first time, on behalf of the democratic socialist movement.
