Inc. Chief Executive Officer Jane Fraser said earlier this week that the US bank is busy preparing to fully separate its former Mexican retail consumer business. The new executives in charge of that operation have another message: We’re busy turning it around.

The sons of Grupo Financiero Banamex Chairman Fernando Chico Pardo met with dozens of investors last week in New York City, with Andres and Felipe Chico Pardo pitching investors about how they’re pushing the Mexican bank to lend more aggressively and gain back market share lost under Citi’s decades-long management of the storied Banamex brand, according to people familiar with the meetings who asked not to be identified discussing private conversations.

Chico Pardo’s purchase of a 25% stake in Banamex in late 2025 was the beginning of a new era for the lender, as Citigroup took a major step to back away. The Wall Street firm has continued to pull back, selling off another chunk to investors including General Atlantic and funds managed by Blackstone Inc. early this year.

Now, a wide group of Wall Street and European banks are being put to work to pitch Citigroup’s remaining stake to investors.

Citigroup will lead the banks, the people said. Other firms on the deal include Bank of America Corp., Goldman Sachs Group Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Morgan Stanley, Barclays Plc, Deutsche Bank AG, Banco Santander SA and UBS Group AG, the people said.

Citigroup has been targeting more than $3 billion for its initial public offering, although the size and price are still under consideration, the people said. The listing is planned for early next year, the people said.

Citigroup, Banamex, Bank of America, JPMorgan, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, Santander and UBS declined to comment. Goldman and Morgan Stanley didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The offering would mark a milestone for Mexico, which has suffered from a prolonged drought of company listings. A listed Banamex will also give investors a new way to bet on the Mexican financial industry, where Grupo Financiero Banorte SAB de CV has been the only big bank that’s based in the country. The industry is instead dominated by foreign-based lenders such as Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA.

Citigroup’s Fraser has been working to shed the New York lender’s stake in Banamex since at least 2021 as she cuts back on the firm’s retail businesses across the world. Fraser said in 2024 that Citigroup wasn’t the right owner of the firm.

When Citigroup took over Banamex in 2001, the Mexican bank oversaw more than 22% of loans in the country. By 2024, that share had fallen to 6%. Since Citi Mexico and Banamex separated operations in late 2024, Banamex has begun to claw back market share and improve profitability.
