Power LLC,
Power LLC, a nuclear-energy startup, lined up $643 million in private and government funding to support construction of its demonstration reactor in Tennessee.
The funding comprises $368 million from backers including Google Ventures and DCVC, as well as $275 million in financing from the US Energy Department, according to Kairos Chief Executive Officer Mike Laufer. The private investment includes $70 million from Samsung C&T Corp. through a partnership announced last month.
Kairos is among a wave of companies developing new nuclear technologies, and one of a handful to win federal approval to build their systems. With US electricity demand climbing, investors and technology companies are pouring money into fission designs to run power-hungry data centers. But the reactors remain largely untested, and initial deployments are likely to come with high price tags. The challenge for Kairos and its rivals will be finding ways to build successive iterations at lower cost. “Continuing to drive down costs is going to be important,” Laufer said in an interview.
Kairos is developing an advanced reactor that uses molten salt as a coolant instead of water and expects its 50-megawatt Hermes 2 demonstration system in Tennessee to start up in 2030. It struck a deal last year to sell the power to Tennessee Valley Authority for data centers owned by Alphabet Inc.’s Google.
Most of the funding will go toward Hermes 2, with some also earmarked for expanding manufacturing capabilities at a site in New Mexico.
