Creditors to telecom provider Optimum Communications Inc. and controlling shareholder Patrick Drahi are at odds over how much equity the billionaire should get in a potential restructuring of the company, according to people familiar with the matter.

Drahi had asked to keep about $3 billion of equity in the reorganized company, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing ongoing private conversations. That’s a wide gap from the roughly $500 million that creditors are willing to give him to hold, they added. The company and creditors have been entangled in litigation for almost a year.

But tensions have been running high since June, when Optimum told creditors they risked triggering more than $4 billion of tax liabilities, a potential massive blow to their recoveries, if they forced it into bankruptcy.

In the meantime, the company has been deliberating on whether it will make interest payments due Thursday, some of the people said. Representatives with the company and the creditor group declined to comment.

Drahi owns about 28% of Class A shares in the company formerly known as Altice USA. He also has 99.9% of the Class B shares, giving him about 90.5% of voting power, according to regulatory filings.

Optimum’s long-running bid to restructure its debt stack has gone through a number of twists and turns. The company late last year accused its lenders of antitrust behavior forg a cooperation agreement to stick together in negotiations with the company, allegedly blocking it from access to capital markets.

Last month, creditors sued the company demanding it unwind transfers they claim siphoned value out of their reach and into the pockets of insiders, including Drahi, who has an estimated net worth of $6.4 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
