Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced Wednesday that a new curfew would be imposed in coastal provinces from Nov. 1 to 10 as part of special security operations aimed at combating organized crime.

"We are going to carry out a new series of special operations between Nov. 1 and 10, with a curfew in the coastal provinces," Noboa said in an interview with Radio Centro.

The president did not specify which provinces would be affected or what hours the curfew would cover. The government has yet to issue an executive decree formalizing the restrictions.

Noboa said a previous curfew, imposed from Sept. 17 to 30 in the coastal provinces of Guayas, Los Rios, Manabi and El Oro, reduced crime by 40%.

The president said authorities seized more than eight metric tons of drugs in September, estimating that the confiscations caused losses of about $400 million to criminal organizations.
