Zimbabwe’s ruling party gave Kudakwashe Tagwirei, a wealthy businessman sanctioned for alleged corruption by the US, a key economic role days after he landed a position as a cabinet minister.
Tagwirei was appointed to the politburo, a decision-making body of the Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front, and made secretary for economic affairs and investment promotion for the party, it said in a statement on Thursday. President Emmerson Mnangagwa named him minister of economic development and investment promotion on Oct. 10.
Tagwirei was one of the most vocal backers of Mnangagwa’s successful campaign for a constitutional amendment to extend his term until 2030 earlier this year. He’s part of a coterie of wealthy businessmen who have drawn closer to the president and benefited from lucrative deals with the state.
He made his fortune from fuel-supply contracts, the acquisition of mines from the state and government contracts to provide fertilizer and equipment to small-scale farmers.
“Tagwirei used a combination of opaque business dealings and his ongoing relationship with President Mnangagwa to grow his business empire dramatically and rake in millions of US dollars,” the US Treasury said in 2020 when it sanctioned him. The UK followed suit a year later. Tagwirei has denied wrong doing.
