Russia has notified Japan that it will hold bombing drills this week on a Russian-controlled but Japanese-claimed island chain off Hokkaido, Kyodo News reported Thursday, citing a Japanese Foreign Ministry source.
消息人士称，日本周二就计划于周六前进行的为期五天的演习提出抗议，演习地点为俄罗斯称之为伊图鲁普岛、日本称之为后罗夫岛的岛屿，认为俄罗斯在争议岛屿上增加军事存在与东京的立场不相容。目前尚未得到任何一方对该演习报道的确认。
Japan on Tuesday protested against the five-day exercise, scheduled to run through Saturday on Iturup, known in Japan as Etorofu, saying Russia's increased military presence on the disputed islands was incompatible with Tokyo's position, the source said. There was no official confirmation from either side of the reported drill.

The report follows Russian President Vladimir Putin’s trip to the island of Etorofu in August, his first visit to the island chain, which prompted protests from Tokyo. Russia calls the islands the Southern Kuril Islands, while Japan refers to them collectively as the Northern Territories.

Tokyo maintains that the Northern Territories, made up of Iturup, Kunashiri, Shikotan, and the Habomai islet group, were "illegally" seized by the now-defunct Soviet Union soon after Japan’s 1945 surrender in World War II. Russia argues that the seizure was legitimate.
