US Representative Gregory Meeks has warned Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella against involving himself in US House of Representatives elections, saying such actions could undermine decades of bipartisan support for relations between the two countries.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Meeks, the ranking Democratic member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, stressed that American voters alone should determine who represents them in Congress.

“A foreign leader interfering in American elections is unacceptable,” Meeks said, underscoring the importance of democracy in the relationship between Washington and Bogota.

The US lawmaker said the two countries shared “two centuries of friendship and partnership,” with democratic values serving as a central pillar of their alliance.

Meeks also expressed concern that the Colombian leader's remarks could weaken the bipartisan goodwill that has sustained bilateral ties for decades.

“I value the U.S.-Colombia alliance deeply, and I am concerned by any action that could erode the bipartisan support it has enjoyed for decades,” he said.

Warning that the issue could have consequences beyond political rhetoric, Meeks said de la Espriella's decision to involve himself in an American election while serving as Colombia's leader put that support “in jeopardy.”“The American people decide who represents them in the House, not foreign leaders,” Meeks said, urging the Colombian president to reconsider his actions.

According to Spanish daily El Pais, de la Espriella endorsed Republican Representative Maria Elvira Salazar in a video published in October, calling her “the best friend of Colombia in the US Congress” and praising her support for the country.
