Crime in Switzerland rose between 2022 and 2025, with fraud and property offenses among the main drivers, while residents reported feeling less safe, a study published by two Swiss universities found, according to Swissinfo.

“This means that the rise in recorded crime is not primarily attributable to a greater willingness to report offenses,” said Dirk Baier, a co-leader of the Crime Survey 2025 project and professor at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW).

The survey found that 15.9% of respondents were victims of fraud in the previous year, up from 8.4% in 2022.

For almost all offenses examined, more respondents reported being victims of crime than in the previous survey, while reporting rates stayed largely unchanged. Sexual offenses were an exception, with no increase in the victimization rate recorded.

The survey also found that 83.1% of respondents felt fairly or very safe in their neighborhood after dark, down from 87.6% in 2022.

Meanwhile, 37.9% considered police presence in public spaces insufficient, compared with 28.9% in 2022. Trust in the police nevertheless remained high.

The survey included 13,500 respondents aged 16 to 80 living in Switzerland. Researchers said the decline in the sense of safety should be taken seriously without overstating its scale.

“Despite the decline in the sense of safety, the population continues to perceive Switzerland as a safe country,” said Nora Markwalder, co-director of the project and professor at the University of St. Gallen.

A supplementary report on domestic violence found no significant overall change compared with 2022 in the proportion of people who had experienced at least one form of domestic violence during a five-year period.

Women reported the experiences at a higher rate than men, at 5.4% compared with 2.2%.

The study also found a statistically significant increase in domestic hate crimes compared to 2022.
