Belgium has agreed to move next March's European Union leaders summit to Rome to mark the 70th anniversary of theg of the Treaty of Rome, a source familiar with the matter told Belga news agency on Thursday.
The summit is expected to be held on March 25, 2027, exactly 70 years after the treaties that laid the foundations for the European Union were signed in the Italian capital.
European Council President Antonio Costa is said to have proposed the move in a meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever as part of his tour of European capitals earlier this autumn, the source said. Belgian government sources confirmed that the country had approved the request.
The move, however, requires an exception to the European Council's rules, which stipulate that EU heads of state and government must hold two formal summits in Brussels during each six-month period.
Under the rules, the European Council president may decide to convene a summit outside Brussels in exceptional circumstances, provided the decision receives unanimous approval from all member states. Each member state therefore has the right to veto the proposal.
On March 25, 1957, two treaties were signed that laid the foundations for today's EU: the treaty establishing the European Economic Community (EEC), which created a single market between Belgium, West Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, and the treaty establishing the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) among those same countries.
