A jury in Tampa, Florida, found on Thursday that Comcast owes digital television provider WhereverTV $213 million in damages for infringing a patent related to streaming video.

By Blake Brittain The jury agreed with Fort Myers-based WhereverTV that Comcast's X1 set-top boxes violate its patent rights in technology for integrating cable channels with streaming services, according to a copy of the verdict provided by WhereverTV's attorneys A spokesperson and attorneys for Comcast did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the verdict WhereverTV's founder Mark Cavicchia invented the patented technology covering "novel systems for receiving, accessing, managing, and viewing digital content from different sources," the company said in a court filing The lawsuit, filed in 2018, said that Comcast integrated the technology into its X1 platform around 2012 when it was "losingrs and market share due to so-called cord cutters" Comcast denied the allegations and argued that the patent was invalid A Florida judge ruled that Comcast did not infringe the patent during an earlier jury trial in 2023, but the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturned his ruling in 2025 and sent the case back for a new trial The case is WhereverTV Inc v. Comcast Corp, US District Court for the Middle District of Florida, No. 2:18-cv-00529.
