Two Palestinian American authors who spent two years writing a history of Palestine for children say they walked away from Penguin Random House, one of the world’s largest publishers, rather than let it rewrite their account of the Nakba and the Oct. 7, 2023 attack.

Jenan Matari and Alana Hadid said on Thursday they withdrew Displacement and the Palestinian American Story after the publisher pressed for changes they said would have stripped the book of its Palestinian perspective.

“When backed into a corner by higher ups to abandon our moral compasses and condemn our resistance in colonial terms just to be published … (Alana Hadid) and I were always going to choose the second option,” Matari wrote on Instagram, referring to standing by their community instead.

“We will never betray our own people for anyone’s comfort – and especially never for personal success,” she said.

In a video posted with Hadid, Matari said the book “that we spent two years of our lives writing together” will be published through Interlink Publishing in 2027.

Interlink is listing it for preorder as Understanding Palestine for Young Readers: A Palestinian American Perspective.

The story was first reported by The Guardian, which said the authors pulled the book in early September after a Random House editor added, without their approval, a line saying of the Hamas's Oct. 7 attack: “These actions were a violation of international law.”“It became clear that Penguin was never actually going to allow us just to write the book we wanted to write,” Hadid told the newspaper.

According to the report, Random House also suggested removing “Jewish” as a modifier in several places, including where the authors described Zionist militias involved in destroying Palestinian villages during the Nakba as “Jewish gangs.”In August, the publisher proposed adding a “publisher’s note” on Oct. 7 and raising the age range from 10 and up to 14 and up, The Guardian reported, citing emails between the authors and the publisher.

A Random House spokesperson told the newspaper that the process “followed our standard bookmaking procedures” and that the publisher supported the authors’ decision to withdraw the book.

Random House Children’s Books, a division of Penguin Random House, signed the book in November 2024 with Hadid, an activist and the older sister of models Bella and Gigi Hadid, and Matari, an author and communications strategist.
