Flyers in Alexandria urge people to report immigration, voting law violations Evan Pappas was on the way back to his house while walking his dog with his wife in Alexandria, Virginia, earlier this week, when he came across flyers that had been left on cars throughout the block.

He spoke to some neighbors about them, and a few minutes later, he walked around and pulled the flyers, titled “Arlington Community Watch Sanctuary City Information Notice,” off of car windshields.

It explains that U.S. law bans “illegal aliens” from voting for president, vice president, Senate or House elections, “or entering/residing in the United States.”The flyers had a logo that says U.S. Department of Homeland Security in the bottom corner.

It included a hotline, urging people to report violations of federal voting or immigration laws.

Now, the neighbors are speaking out about the flyers, worrying they could deter people from voting just weeks before Election Day.

“It was to perpetuate a narrative, and whether they fully believed it or not, it was to instill a fear that the election process is nonenforceable, or that there’s something wrong with it, or that it’s not secure, or it was to keep people from turning out to the polls,” Pappas said.

In a statement, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said the agency “was not involved in the distribution of these flyers.”

Olivia Troye, who lives in the same neighborhood, said she woke up Monday morning and realized several blocks of cars had “anti-immigrant flyers.”“They had covered this street and all of our neighboring streets,” she said.

Troye worked for former Vice President Mike Pence during President Donald Trump’s first term, and announced a plan to run for Congress as a Democrat in a redrawn district under Virginia’s redistricting push.

She’s lived in the area on and off for about two decades, and she said she has “never seen anything like it.”Footage from her doorbell camera, Troye said, shows someone wearing a mask putting the flyers on cars. She’s shared the footage with Alexandra police, she said.

In a statement to WTOP, the Alexandria Police Department said it’s inviting the public to submit information or video footage of individuals distributing the flyers to an online evidence portal.

“While our initial review has not identified any criminal violations associated with the incident, the matter has been documented in an informational report and assigned for further investigation in accordance with departmental policy,” a police spokesperson said.

WTOP has also contacted the city’s Electoral Board and Mayor Alyia Gaskins for comment.
