, two young Saudis landed at LAX, Los Angeles International Airport. Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi set foot in the United States for the first time. They did not speak a word of English but were determined to learn the language and, above all, how to fly planes. They were the first two of the 19 hijackers sent by Al-Qaeda to carry out the deadliest attack ever perpetrated on American soil, on September 11, 2001. Al-Mihdhar and al-Hazmi were part of the team that took control of American Airlines Flight 77 and crashed it into the side of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense in Washington, killing 184 people.

During the first months of their time in the US, the two men were able to rely on a guardian angel, a compassionate compatriot who found them a place to stay in the residential complex where he lived in San Diego. He acted as their guarantor, advanced their first month's rent, opened a bank account for them and put his extensive network of contacts at their disposal.

The man was Omar al-Bayoumi, a Saudi living in the US, who claimed to have met them by chance on February 1, 2000, barely 15 days after their arrival, in a Middle Eastern restaurant in Los Angeles. Al-Bayoumi was ever-present in the American journey of al-Hazmi and al-Mihdhar, organizing a reception for them shortly after they settled in San Diego in February 2000. A friend of his enrolled them in a flight school, another acquaintance hosted them when they moved in June 2000 and so on. There were enough coincidences of this kind to make al-Bayoumi a suspect, if not an accomplice.
