Owl Capital Inc. is well positioned to withstand AI-driven disruption in the software industry and investor concerns about private credit have been overblown, according to the firm’s global head of institutional capital.

“There is no doubt going to be disruption” in the software sector, James Clarke said in an interview in Tokyo on Friday. “But what I can tell you is the software we focus on is highly differentiated.”Clarke’s comments come as Blue Owl has been grappling with elevated redemption requests at some of its private credit funds. Some investors have sought to exit the asset class on concerns about the quality of loans, including to program developers that face competition from advances in artificial intelligence.

While withdrawal pressure eased somewhat in the third quarter, investor sentiment remains volatile, Clarke said.

“The volume was turned up very high on sentiment and fear earlier this year, and it was turned down very low on facts,” Clarke, a senior managing director at the New York-based firm, said in a separate interview with Bloomberg Television. “The truth is starting to manifest itself” now, he added.

Blue Owl has recently stepped up its communication with clients in a bid to calm private credit worries, Clarke said. The firm has “kind of been used as a poster child” for negative sentiment in the industry this year, he said, but “we haven’t run from this, we’ve walked into it.”Clarke sees growing opportunities outside of the US, especially in data center financing. The firm has 130 data center locations globally, with around 14% in the Asia-Pacific region, including Osaka and Tokyo, he said.

Blue Owl is building relationships with Japanese institutional and wealth clients, Clarke said. The firm recently hired former Barclays Plc executive Takeo Ikemori to jointly lead its Japan business.
