Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has called for Group of 20 policymakers to closely monitor financial markets, speaking against a backdrop of renewed pressure on Japan’s currency and a selloff in bonds around the world in recent weeks.“We reaffirmed our existing commitments on foreign exchange at the Group of 20 and other meetings,” Katayama told reporters Thursday after meetings in Bangkok with finance chiefs and central bankers from key developed and emerging markets.

“I stressed the need to monitor financial markets with a high sense of urgency there.”

Earlier in the day, Katayama warned speculators that Japan was prepared to take action in the currency market again if necessary, after the yen weakened to its lowest level against the dollar this month — following hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data.

She also said there’s been no change in the stance of Washington and Tokyo since their joint intervention to prop up the yen in July.
