Happy Friday. I traveled to New York, Dallas and back since last week’s newsletter. It was a big week for frequent-flier program changes, with Southwest and United shaking things up.

Southwest was in the spotlight for other news, too. The airline unveiled the name of the new airport lounges it is developing with Chase. Drum roll, please: Icon Lounge. If you don’t think that sounds much like typically spunky Southwest, you’re right. The airline’s execs say it nods to Southwest’s iconic history and founder Herb Kelleher, an industry icon.

Delta Air Lines has led the U.S. airline industry’s premium-travel push and this week we got a look at what’s coming to its pricey Delta One business-class cabin. Look for new suites with plush padding, longer lie-flat beds and nifty touches like a hook for your glasses, plus a revamped food and alcohol menu. I tried the sea bass and give it a 10/10. Let’s hope it translates at 35,000 feet.

Today it has two major tiers: A List and A List Preferred. They require 20 or 40 one-way flights a year, respectively, or set spending levels. (I have A List.) Beginning in January, those names are gone. Southwest will now have silver, gold and platinum status. A List becomes silver, A List Preferred, gold. Platinum is new and effectively replaces its current Companion Pass program. You can earn any level through flights or spending. If you do it on flights, which I do, the number of flights for silver is going up from 20 to 25.

If those gem names sound like every other airline’s tiers, you’re right. My predecessor, longtime Middle Seat columnist Scott McCartney, asked Southwest executives why they didn’t get more creative like the Southwest of old. His cheeky suggestion: Herb (Kelleher), Gary (Kelly) and Colleen (Barrett) tiers. Kelly was the airline’s longtime CEO, Colleen a longtime top executive credited with the airline’s culture.
