The governor of Yemen’s Taiz province announced Friday that electricity and water stations, as well as the city’s waste collection services, had shut down because the Houthis were preventing fuel from entering the city.

“Houthi militias are besieging Taiz and have closed all roads leading to it for the past 15 days,” Nabil Shamsan said in a statement on the US social media company Hospitals in Taiz are unable to provide medical care to patients due to shortages of medicines and medical supplies, Shamsan said.

The Yemeni official warned that conditions could deteriorate further for around 4 million displaced people and residents of Taiz, as relief organizations are unable to reach them.

Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and several other provinces in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene the following year in support of the internationally recognized government.

Tensions have escalated since July, with Taiz remaining a major front line in Yemen’s conflict as government forces and the Houthis engage in repeated clashes around the city.
