Ticket sales will finance 75% of the Louvre’s €1 billion ($1.16 billion) renovation plan, the museum’s president and director, Christophe Leribault, told broadcaster France Inter on Friday.
Leribault said the project, known as “Louvre Nouvelle Renaissance,” would also receive €300 million ($348 million) in funding from the United Arab Emirates. The museum will also need to raise €360 million from private donors, he said.
“It is enormous. In France, we have never faced a challenge of this scale,” Leribault said.
“These are necessary works if we want the Louvre to remain the most beautiful and largest museum in the world,” he added.
