Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has called for stronger protection of the country's pharmaceutical and petrochemical sectors, arguing that pressure from the US and China is threatening European industries despite their competitiveness, public broadcaster VRT reported.

Speaking on the sidelines of the European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday, De Wever said the planned restructuring at pharmaceutical giant GSK, which could result in more than 1,200 job losses in Belgium, was linked to the company's need to increase investments in the US.

"When you have an American president who mandates investment in the US and refuses to import any more vaccines, companies like GlaxoSmithKline run into difficulties," De Wever said.

De Wever stressed that Belgium's petrochemical industry required protection, warning that the sector faced serious challenges and was particularly vulnerable.

The premier also criticized China's practices in clinical trials, describing them as unfair competition backed by substantial state subsidies.

He argued that the EU must strengthen its internal market while developing measures to protect European industries against unfair external competition.

According to De Wever, integrating the European market and protecting it must go hand in hand, while avoiding excessive protectionism.

"Only when we have a unified market will we be able to protect it by avoiding the pitfalls of senseless protectionism. We must not copy the follies of others," he said.

The premier acknowledged that European decision-making was slower than that of major powers, but said this reflected the bloc's democratic structure. "But Europe is not a dictatorship. It is not a country where one president can decide one thing on Monday, the opposite on Wednesday, and something else again on Friday," he said.
