Cuba’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Ernesto Soberon Guzman, on Friday denounced a planned US-organized event at UN headquarters, accusing Washington of using the international organization’s premises to promote a hostile political agenda against Cuba.
Speaking to reporters, Guzman condemned an event scheduled for Oct. 19 by the US permanent mission to the UN, titled “Cuba Libre: The Oppression Havana Heights.”“We denounce this event in the strongest possible terms. “It is a politically motivated exercise, organized in a questionable manner, whose clear purpose is to target Cuba, promote a hostile narrative against our country, and use the premises of the United Nations to advance the political agenda of the United States government against a sovereign member state,” he said.
Guzman stressed that the UN should not be used as a platform for political persecution or campaigns that undermine the sovereignty of member states.
He argued that the US government was undermining the organization’s financial stability while using public funds to organize events that, in Cuba’s view, did not serve the UN’s agenda.
Guzman dismissed the planned gathering as a “political charade” and insisted that Cuba would not yield to pressure from Washington.
“Cuba will not be intimidated, blackmailed, or silenced,” he said. He called on UN member states to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, reject “double standards” and support efforts to end the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.
“The issue before the international community is clear: the United States should stop attacking Cuba and comply with the repeated demand of the international community to end its illegal and inhumane blockade,” he said.
