Alberta achieved a C$2.2 billion ($1.6 billion) surplus in the fiscal year that ended in March amid a surge in oil prices due to the Iran War.

It was the fifth straight surplus for the oil-rich province, it said in a press release Friday. The surplus came after Alberta’s government projected a C$5.2 billion deficit when the budget was announced last year.

“Five consecutive surpluses mean Alberta is on solid ground, and we’re on track for a sixth,” Premier Danielle Smith said in the release. “This success reflects a province that works hard, builds big and plans for the long term.”The fortunes of Alberta have turned around sharply since US and Israel launched strikes on Iran in late February, causing oil prices to surge above $100 a barrel. Just two days before the start of the war, the province was projecting that its budget deficit would more than double in the coming fiscal year after softer crude prices coincided with a surge in population to strain public finances.
