Labour has finally turned on the Greens. Why did it take so long?

All it has taken is a few opinion polls, a referral to the equality watchdog and a threat of legal action for Andy Burnham’s Labour to realise that, when it comes to the Greens, perhaps there is a red line for stirring up Jew hatred.

It was after all Burnham who, in one of his first acts as Prime Minister, apologised for the previous government daring to stand up for Israel in the aftermath of the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023. What is more, he did it while on a podcast hosted by Gary Lineker, who was pushed out of the BBC for sharing an anti-Semitic social media post (which he did apologise for).

And it was his Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, who acted like Hamas was a mere inconvenience, a group responsible solely for October 7 and no other ills. While he was handing over millions more of our tax money to the Palestinians to squander on (likely on more corruption and new terror tunnels), he proudly announced sanctions on Israelis – whom he declared guilty of “war crimes” and “ethnic cleansing”.

And it was Miliband too who declared to the protesters (who have, since October 7, called for the eradication of the Jewish State) “you were right”.

Labour had seen the votes of Jew haters peeling off to the Greens and they wanted to grab them back. Even though Jewish leaders asked them to be more careful with their rhetoric, they carried on.

Until it went too far even for a Left-wing which has whipped itself up into a fury to prove who can hate Israel more without stopping to take a breath about what really motivates this ferocious, frightening fervour.

The Greens’ “Zionism is racism” motion, created by a woman who happily admits to being a friend of a terrorist, is Labour’s red line. Calling for the entire eradication of the Jewish state and endorsing terrorism was just a bit too obvious.

It still took Labour more than a week to reach this conclusion. Today they insisted that any Greens they share power with in local councils either denounce the motion or end their coalition. It is believed that Labour currently shares power with the Greens in five authorities across England.

And they may have only come to that conclusion when, instead of the usual post-conference boost, the Green Party seemed to have gone down in the latest polls.

The spectre of the Campaign Against Antisemitism referring the Greens to the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) was no doubt a reminder that just a few years ago Labour was referred to the same body and found guilty of unlawful discrimination and harassment against Jews.

While the threat from the Jewish Greens that they were going to take their own party to court for discrimination and harassment over the Zionism is racism policy was also a reminder that even if political parties are happy to ramp up their attacks on Jews, that doesn’t mean it is either right or legal.

It also means that Labour can proudly proclaim itself the real party against anti-Jewish racism while piling pressure on the Liberal Democrats, who share power with the Greens in 22 councils (often in opposition to Labour) to do the same. This is rather politically convenient, isn’t it?

How did the Left once again allow itself to get into this unholy mess? How does one war more than 2,000 miles away, a war that effectively ended more than a year ago, still dominate our politics in the way it does? Why are these parties so content to use Britain’s Jews, who number less than 300,000, as a political football once again? As one of them, I can’t tell you how exhausting and how frightening this is.

Anyone who has learnt their Holocaust history will know that the Nazis followed a familiar pattern in alighting on the Jew. In times of flux, worry, and danger, people will always look for a scapegoat. And it might as well be a familiar one. As Jean-Paul Sartre wrote in 1946: “If the Jew did not exist, the anti-Semite would create him.”The Greens can’t solve the climate crisis. Labour has nothing to say about immigration or the cost of living. We have Russia and Iran constantly poking at our defences. And perhaps that explains why they will continue to have lots to say about the evils of Israel while trying, next time, not to quite cross the red line.
