The UK markets watchdog lifted lifetime bans on traders convicted of rigging benchmark interest rates, a week after the Court of Appeal overturned their criminal convictions.

By Lucca de Paoli“We have revoked the bans of Colin Bermingham, Philippe Moryoussef, Jonathan Mathew and Christian Bittar,” the Financial Conduct Authority said on Friday. “The FCA will take no further action against these individuals in relation to this matter.”The Court of Appeal quashed the convictions of five former Barclays Plc bankers and ex-Deutsche Bank AG trader Bittar last week.

The reversals came after Tom Hayes, the ex-UBS Group AG trader who was the first and most high profile of the people convicted for rate rigging, had his conviction overturned at the UK Supreme Court. The judges ruled that the jury was misdirected at the Hayes trial and that he and another trader, Carlo Palombo, should be exonerated.

The scandal — over the fixing of benchmark rates that underpinned more than $350 trillion of loans and securities — surfaced when the banking community still faced public outrage after the 2008 financial crisis and led to global fines of almost $10 billion for a dozen banks and brokerages.

Serious Fraud Office prosecutions led to nine convictions for fraud offenses, but only one of those verdicts still stands — with that one set to be appealed as well.

The Supreme Court ruled that Hayes’ initial conviction was unsafe as the jury had been misdirected at his criminal trial despite saying that there may have been enough evidence to convict him. The legal errors at play in the Hayes trial were similar enough to the convictions that saw the five Barclays traders jailed that the convictions should be overturned, lawyers for the appellants argued.
