Mexico’s state power utility plans to grant preliminary approval to scores of renewable energy projects next week that in total would produce enough electricity to rival eight nuclear reactors, helping fortify the nation’s blackout-prone grid.

The board of Comision Federal de Electricidad is scheduled to vote Oct. 20 on more than 60 projects, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

The proposed power plants, mostly wind and solar farms, will add about 8.2 gigawatts of capacity to Mexico’s grid and cost an estimated $12.5 billion, depending on transmission expenses, according to the person who asked not to be identified because the matter isn’t public. A second person said the number of projects that receive final approval could be smaller. A CFE spokesperson didn’t reply to a request for comment.

The contracts are part of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s strategy to shore up Mexico’s beleaguered grid by enlisting private companies to partner with the nation’s power utility to build more infrastructure. Mexico’s grid has suffered seasonal blackouts in recent years, especially on the hot and humid Yucatan Peninsula, as years of underinvestment have left the system without enough power plants and transmission lines.

The push for outside investment is a significant shift from Mexico’s previous president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who largely barred foreign investment from the electricity sector. Mexican law, however, still requires the state to maintain at least 54% ownership of all power plants.

Sheinbaum is trying to add 32 gigawatts of generating capacity in Mexico by 2030, with 40% from renewable sources.
