State-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Co. has activated an emergency response to an explosion on a gas pipeline belonging to one of its subsidiaries, it said in a statement.

By Anthony Osae-Brown The NNPC has “activated its emergency response procedures and isolated the affected pipeline segment to limit further impact,” it said in the statement posted on X late Friday. “We are deeply concerned by reports of injuries and damage to homes and businesses,” it said.

The pipeline, which is owned by NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Ltd., is located in the Aleto community, within the Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State in the Niger Delta region. The area is home to most of the nation’s oil production.

“The cause of the incident and the full extent of its impact are currently being assessed,” the NNPC said.

The company produced an average of 7,680 million standard cubic feet of gas a day in 2025, according to its financial statements published earlier this month.
