Bersama Party suspended co-founder Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from party activities for three months after the politician said he was detained by Islamic authorities for being in close proximity with a woman who isn’t a family member.

Nik Nazmi, a former minister in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s cabinet, said he didn’t engage in any immoral activity with the woman when authorities from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department found them alone in a private space during a raid. He said they were with friends in a studio in Kuala Lumpur before moving to a separate venue to study materials linked to a project they were discussing.

“At the time JAIS officers arrived, indeed it was only me and the woman in question that were present,” Nik Nazmi said, referring to an acronym for the religious body. “I admit it was a mistake. As I had told the JAIS officers, we did not commit any indecent acts that could trigger suspicion.”Muslim men and women who aren’t spouses or considered as close family members aren’t allowed to be alone together under the country’s Shariah laws, especially in private or secluded spaces. Enforcement officers are authorized to investigate and arrest those suspected of such offenses.

Nik Nazmi was Malaysia’s natural resources and environmental sustainability minister when he and then-Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli left Anwar’s cabinet last year, soon after they were defeated in an internal party election that was marred by allegations of vote-rigging and nepotism.

Nik Nazmi apologized to his wife and family, and said he will cooperate with the legal process. He said he was sorry for disappointing Bersama supporters and would accept any decision made by the party. Bersama said Nik Nazmi’s suspension will be effective Oct. 20.

“Bersama takes this development seriously and stands by the position that every issue involving the leadership and party members must be addressed appropriately, in order to preserve the integrity, credibility, and public confidence in the party,” party President Syukri Razab said in a statement. “This decision is necessary and reasonable, without denying all the contributions and commitment of Nik Nazmi to the Bersama struggle.”
