Israeli settlers on Saturday, October 17, attacked a convoy of European diplomats and beat up a visiting French mayor, in an escalation of recent violence during the Palestinian olive harvest, witnesses and diplomats told Agence France-Presse. Cars from the French, Belgian and Polish missions had brought diplomats to visit Taybeh, a largely Christian village in the occupied West Bank, when settlers descended to stop Palestinians from gathering olives, witnesses said.
Masked settlers made aggressive statements toward the diplomats before kicking Bernard Baudoux, 78, the leftist mayor of the northern French town of Aulnoye-Aymeries, according to witnesses and diplomats who confirmed his identity. Two people who spoke to him said that he was hurt but did not need to go to hospital.
"I think that if settlers are behaving like this, there is a tolerance on the part of the Israeli government," said Baudoux after he was attacked. "The whole world needs to know what's happening there. For me, I'll go back to my country and everything will be fine. Those who continue to suffer the most are those who are here." The mayor, a leftist, said he was visiting with the French consul general in Jerusalem and a priest from his home parish to sign a goodwill cooperation agreement between his city, which has an olive emblem, and Taybeh.
He said that two to three cars suddenly arrived and settlers came out shouting incomprehensible insults about France. The mayor, who had put on a sash in the French tricolor, said that the settlers kicked him and beat him with iron bars, throwing him to the ground.
"It's the gratuitous nature of the violence that stuns me," he said. "They arrived completely enraged. It's absolutely incredible that settlers can behave like this," he said, predicting the attack would go unpunished despite quick Israeli promises of an investigation. He said his parish priest helped him up and that they rushed off in car. He ultimately did not suffer serious injuries and was able to continue his visit to the town.
Olive harvest The West Bank has seen an especially violent olive harvest season as Israeli settlers try to physically stop Palestinians from gathering their crops. On Friday, settlers seriously injured an American photographer for The Washington Post as she covered the harvest, and last week settlers beat up an AFP photographer. The violence comes during the final days of an election campaign in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has championed settlers as he seeks their support in the upcoming poll.
Belgium's foreign minister on Saturday condemned "in the strongest terms" the attack, which left a Belgian car damaged.
"Impunity for violent settlers must end," Minister Maxime Prevot said on X. "This violence cannot be separated from Israel's illegal settlement policy. Belgium condemns settlement expansion and attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians from their land." He said the Belgian consul general was among those in the delegation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office on Saturday alleged a "smear" campaign against settlers, as he tried to cast doubt over the circumstances of the attack.
"These reports come amid concerns about a coordinated campaign to smear Israel and the Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria during the annual olive harvest, relying on sensational headlines before the full facts emerge," his office said in a statement, using the biblical name for the West Bank.
