As China marks the 90th anniversary of the Red Army’s victory in the Long March, some young Chinese are looking to the historic journey for guidance as they face uncertainty in their lives and future.

For Lyu Leiyiyi, a 22-year-old student at the Communication University of China, the spirit of the Long March offers a sense of stability at a time when people and the environment around her are changing at a dizzying pace.

“People in their 20s are going through a period of uncertainty,” Lyu said. “The spirit of the Long March can help us build a more stable inner core.”This expanded perspective eventually intersected with China’s efforts to anchor young citizens in the country’s revolutionary history, such as the Long March.

The Long March was a strategic retreat by the Communist Party’s Red Army between 1934 and 1936 as they sought to evade the ruling Kuomintang or Nationalist forces during China’s civil war.

The Red Army covered about 10,000km (6,200 miles), crossing snow-covered mountains and treacherous marshlands while enduring hunger, exhaustion and pursuit by the KMT.

The spirit, perseverance and hopefulness taken from the experience have since been consistently promoted by the party and the government as part of China’s revolutionary legacy.

Lyu has visited several Long March sites, including Chishui in southwestern Guizhou province, where the Red Army’s 1935 campaign to evade Nationalist encirclement is commemorated as a model of military strategy in the party’s revolutionary history.

Lyu said the soldiers’ statues and displays of the Red Army’s crude weapons brought home the hardships of the Long March and the soldiers’ determination to prevail.

“It also makes me pay more attention to Long March commemorations,” Lyu said, noting her university had produced AI-generated songs for this year’s anniversary.

October 22 marks the 90th anniversary of the Long March’s victory, when the Red Army’s three main forces completed their convergence in 1936.

State news agency Xinhua in 2016 described the day as marking the “complete failure” of the KMT’s efforts to encircle and intercept the Red Army. Decades after the retreat, the party continues to promote the Long March’s legacy for future generations.

“Each generation has its own long march, and every generation should proceed in its own way,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said while marking the journey’s 80th anniversary in 2016.

Ella Shi, a 23-year-old postgraduate student in Beijing, said the Long March held a more psychological significance for her generation.

“Although our material needs are largely met today, we face growing psychological pressure,” Shi said.

Psychological distress is a concern among Chinese university students, with 15.5 per cent of more than 41,000 such students surveyed in 2023 reporting symptoms of anxiety, according to a 2025 study published in BMC Public Health, a medical journal.

Employment uncertainty has become a common source of anxiety for university students, according to a June 2025 article in China Education Daily, a newspaper affiliated with the Ministry of Education.

Shi, who is navigating this year’s graduate recruitment season, described the job hunt as her own “long march”, saying that “without inner strength and courage, it would be difficult to overcome one setback after another”.

Since late August, she has submitted more than 70 job applications. Only two companies invited her to artificial intelligence (AI) pre-screening interviews, but she has yet to hear back from either.

Shi initially targeted engineering safety positions but recently expanded her search to include sales roles. “I really can’t find a job in my field,” she said.

China’s urban youth unemployment rate stood at 18.9 per cent in August – up from 17.9 per cent in July and a one-year high for the index. “But we must believe that we will eventually reach our destination,” Shi said, adding that perseverance was an important part of the Long March’s spirit.

Andy Miao, a postgraduate student at a university in Beijing, also said that spirit helped him cope with pressures related to “studies, employment, innovation and life choices”.

“The spirit of the Long March remains relevant today as it gives people the conviction, resilience and solidarity to face long-term challenges and uncertainty,” he added.

Young Chinese people have “a heartfelt sense of identification with and pride in their country”, but their “expressions of these feelings are more individualised and centred on their own social circles”, according to a July article in state-affiliated magazine Defence Industry Conversion in China.

Alice, a trainee teacher at a Beijing secondary school who gave only her first name, said her school had organised themed assignments, sports meets and other activities to help students learn about the Long March.

“Through this process, students are encouraged to reflect on the Long March,” she said. “For universities, they organise activities related to the Long March spirit, and student societies do too.”She said a university hiking club she knew of had organised a trek to retrace the Long March route to celebrate its 90th anniversary.

The Ministry of Education has called on universities to organise activities marking the 90th anniversary, including retracing sections of the route and visiting revolutionary sites and memorials, according to a notice issued in June.

Alice said the spirit of the Long March remained relevant because the struggles it represented had not disappeared, even though their form had changed.

“For example, competition between China and the United States continues, whether in technology or trade,” she said.

The competition has intensified in areas including trade and advanced technology, as Beijing stresses the need for China to overcome external challenges and achieve greater technological self-reliance.

Alice said educational activities could have an impact even if students did not visibly express their influence.

“[The activities] are effective, but the spirit may have been internalised rather than outwardly expressed,” she said. However, not all young people in China were aware of the anniversary. “I had no idea,” said Lucia Dong, 25.

Understanding the spirit of the Long March did not necessarily mean remembering specific dates or commemorative occasions, she added.

Dong said doing her best and helping others where she could were the best ways to convey her love of the party and country. As she saw it, she had been “living by” the Long March legacy of hard work and mutual help “all along”.
